Sea salt

Sea salt is salt produced by the evaporation of seawater. This salt is used as a seasoning in food, cooking, cosmetics, and for food preservation. It is also known as gulf salt, solar salt, or simply salt. The production of sea salt, like mineral rock salt, dates back to prehistoric times.

The sea salts available on today’s market vary widely in chemical composition. Although the main component is sodium chloride, the remaining portion can range from less than 0.2% to 22% of other salts. These salts are primarily chlorides and sulfates of calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and contain much smaller amounts of many trace elements found in natural seawater. While the composition of salts on the market may differ, the ionic composition of natural brine is relatively constant.
