Thyme is one of the most important and well-known medicinal herbs in Iran. It owes its antimicrobial, antibacterial, and carminative (anti-bloating) properties to two main compounds: thymol and carvacrol. Around 350 species of this plant have been identified worldwide.
Thyme is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and hygiene industries. It is available in the market in various forms such as dried leaves, essential oil, and herbal distillate.
In addition to being used in tea, dried thyme leaves are commonly added as a flavoring to meat dishes, salads, dairy products, and stews.
